Kentucky, 10/14/06-- This week, Louisville (Kentucky), the largest city in one of America's largest tobacco growing states, voted 19-5 in favor of clean indoor air. Beginning July 1, 2007, smoking will no longer be permitted in virtually all workplaces, including restaurants and bars.
"Congratulations to the Louisville City Council for caring about the health of workers," says Joe Cherner, founder of BREATHE (Bar and Restaurant Employees Advocating Together for a Healthy Environment). "No one should have to breathe a substance that causes cancer, heart disease, respiratory disease, and asthma to hold a job."
In July, Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher signed an executive order eliminating tobacco smoke pollution in government buildings.
